In 2023, a total of 1,247 attempts were made to ban or restrict access to books in libraries across the United States. The number of unique titles affected was the highest on record, with 4,240 in total. Titles representing LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities, issues, and experiences accounted for almost half of the total number of challenged books.
