In 2023, Europe's largest underground mine was the Kiruna Mine, located in Sweden. The iron ore mine had an estimated production of 24.67 million metric tons that year. This was followed by the Verbundwerk Hattorf Wintershall mine, a magnesium mining project in Germany with a production volume of approximately 14 million metric tons. Serbia's Cukaru Peki Upper Zone Copper-Gold Mine was in the third position, producing around 14 million metric tons of copper.
