In June 2022, Continente was the most popular hypermarket in Portugal, obtaining a score of nearly 90 percent out of a maximum of 100 percent. Auchan ranked second as the most favored hypermarket with a score of 87 percent. Pão de Açúcar came third with about 84 percent score.

Five hypermarket chains were selected for the study namely: Auchan (formerly Jumbo), Continente, Intermarché Super, Leclerc, and Pão de Açúcar.

Each customer was asked to score the following eleven parameters for each company:

1. Friendly employees;
2. Atmosphere in store;
3. Availability of self-service checkouts;
4. Availability of fruits and vegetables;
5. Freshness of fruits and vegetables;
6. Price / quality ratio;
7. Waiting time for payment;
8. Variety of food products;
9. Variety of non-food products;
10. General.
