As of April 2024, around 99 percent of the total exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Monaco was designed as a marine protected area. This was followed by Palau, the UK, and Kazakhstan, where marine protected areas represented some 97, 56 and 49 percent of the countries' EEZ, respectively. On the other hand, the share of both Costa Rica's and Indonesia's EEZ marine protected area stood at roughly 0.3 percent.

The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of a country extends 200 nautical miles from the coastline, or to the mid-point between coastlines where the EEZ of different countries would otherwise overlap.
