Between 2021 and 2022, natural gas exports from Italy tripled, after fluctuating around an average of 220 million cubic meters between 2005 and 2020.
While natural gas supply in Italy is still strongly dependent on imports, the exported natural gas is sourced from Italian strategic stocks, which are among the largest in Europe. The decision to exploit them was probably a consequence of the inauguration of the TAP (Trans Adriatic Pipeline) importing gas from Azerbaijan since 2021 and the natural gas prices rising in 2022.
