The combined number of full- and part-time employees at Amazon.com has increased significantly since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, after peaking at 1.62 million in the first quarter of 2022, Amazon's workforce saw a sharp decline. In the second quarter of 2024, the U.S. e-commerce multinational headquartered in Seattle, Washington, had 1,532,000 full- and part-time employees.
Amazon’s financial dance
Amazon’s sharp decline in its workforce is mirrored in the annual net income incurred by the company. In 2022, amazon.com reported a net loss of around 2.7 billion U.S. dollars. However, this is not seen in the company's net sales revenue, which has generally continued to increase over the years, with North America accounting for the largest share. In the final quarter of 2023, amazon.com recorded its highest revenue ever, generating a total of 169 billion U.S. dollars.
Amazon's labor dwindles
When taking a closer look at the number of workers that amazon.com has employed over the past decade, it is evident that there has been a noticeable decline in recent years. From 2021 to 2023, there was a decrease of over 83,000 employees working for the online marketplace. Even with this decrease in employee count, Amazon still ranks second only to Walmart when comparing leading global companies by the number of employees. To further illustrate, Walmart employed a workforce of 2.1 million individuals in 2023, while Amazon employed 1.5 million.
