Less people had trust in financial institutions in the United States in 2023 than in 2021, according to a survey carried out in April 2023 among 1,500 American consumers. The share of respondents who trusted financial institutions dropped from 28 percent in 2021 to 20 percent in 2023. At the same time, the share of respondents indicating mistrust in financial institutions increased from nine percent to 14 percent.

The source adds the following information: Results have a maximum margin of sampling error of 2.5 percent at a 95 percent confidence level. The share of respondents was 1,500 in 2023 and 1,504 in 2021.
Respondents were asked about how much they trust financial institutions. The answers were categorized as follows:
- Do not trust: bottom two on a seven-point scale
- Neutral: middle three on a seven-point scale
- Completely trust: top two on a seven-point scale
