In 2022, New Zealand had the highest gender parity score in the Asia-Pacific region, around 0.84. This equals an average gender gap of approximately 16 percent in the country. New Zealand had the fourth-highest gender parity score worldwide that year. In contrast, Japan was the worst performing country in East Asia and the Pacific, reaching a score of 0.65, which represents a gender gap of around 35 percent. Overall, Afghanistan had the lowest score in APAC at around 0.44, showcasing the highest level of gender inequality across the region.
The gender gap index takes into account the four factors economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.
