In a survey conducted between December 2021 and January 2022, around 24.1 percent of unmarried women aged 20 to 39 in Japan reported that they never had a romantic partner. In the same survey, the share of single men who never had a romantic relationship was higher in all age groups.

The sample was selected based on the distribution of marital status, gender, and age in Eastern and Western Japan in the 2020 population census.
Original question: "Please indicate how many of the following people you had in your life - the number of people (including spouse) you were romantically involved with from junior high school graduation until your first marriage. If you are currently not married, please indicate the number of people until now."
