Sustainability influences consumers' purchasing decisions. In 2022, about eight out of ten consumers in the United Kingdom (UK) reported preferring environmentally friendly packaging materials. Similarly, the survey shows that 80 percent of shoppers believed online shipments contained unneeded amounts of packaging.
Conscious consumers
A survey carried out in 2022 revealed that UK consumers have become more conscious of sustainability when purchasing products if compared to only a year earlier. However, there are differences among age groups. Younger generations are most likely to buy products from ethical retailers. For example, 66 percent of consumers aged 18 to 24 would buy from brands with strong ethical and sustainable credentials. More than that, UK consumers try to limit their environmental impact by choosing recyclable products and considering the life cycle of products.
Toward a greener delivery
In the United Kingdom, eco-friendly delivery is most relevant to shoppers between the ages of 18 and 34. A mere two percent of those aged 55 and over considered eco-friendly delivery important. When presented with the option to pay three euros extra for eco-friendly deliveries, only 27 percent of online shoppers were in favor. Besides age group differences, environmental consciousness varies based on the region or even city. In 2021, Glasgow and Belfast had the largest share of online shoppers considering carbon-friendly delivery methods.
