In fiscal year 2023, around 343 thousand kiloliters of milk for school lunches were produced in Japan, remaining at a similar level as the previous year. Following the Second World War, milk was introduced to school lunches to counter malnourishment of children in Japan. Nowadays, schools providing meals as part of the School Lunch Program include three options: full meals with milk, complementary lunch with the option to include milk, and milk without a meal.
