In a survey conducted in Japan from December 2021 to January 2022, around 39.9 percent of respondents aged 18 to 29 years were in favor of introducing a dual system that would give married couples a choice of sharing the same surname or keeping separate surnames. In almost all age groups, the majority of respondents was in favor of maintaining the current system of same surnames but allowing the use of maiden names as aliases.
