Weather, climate, and water-related disasters caused the death of over 731,700 people in Africa between 1970 and 2019. Most of the fatalities occurred in the 1980s. Severe droughts hit Ethiopia, Sudan, Mozambique, and Chad in that decade, provoking more than 550,000 deaths. Overall, Africa registered nearly 1,700 hazards in the period from 1970 to 2019.
