On Sunday, April 24, 2022, the incumbent Emmanuel Macron came out on top in the second round of the French presidential elections. Yet, vote transfers, an electoral process by which voters having voted for a candidate in a given vote choose another candidate in a subsequent vote where this candidate is no longer present, were to his advantage. He has indeed benefited from the vote reserves of Jean-Luc Mélechon, Yannick Jadot, and Valérie Pécresse: if more than 40 percent of the French who voted for the candidate of the France Insoumise in the first round of the elections turned to abstention or blank vote, 42 percent of them gave their vote to Emmanuel Macron, against 17 percent to Marine Le Pen.
