When questioned a few weeks before the first round of the 2022 presidential elections, the French were almost unanimous in their view that the rising abstention rate was a sign of a growing gap between elected officials and the people. Also, more than four out of five saw this phenomenon as a sign of poor democratic health, or even as a danger. They were more divided, however, on the idea that abstaining would be a sign of a refusal to participate in public life.
In March 2022, only two-thirds of French people planned to vote.
