Vincent Aboubakar, playing for the Cameroonian national team, has scored eight goals placing him as the top scorer at the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Karl Toko Ekambi scored five times, whereas Hellings Mhango, Ibrahima Kone, Sofiane Boufal, and Sadio Mané scored on three different occasions in the competition. Several other players followed with either two or one goal scored and were not included in this list. Among the most valuable players on the African continent, Sadio Mané was the only player who scored over three goals.
Originally, the tournament was planned for June and July 2021. However, it was rescheduled twice due to unfavorable weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 AFCON took place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2021. In the final, Senegal beated Egypt on penalties, winning AFCON for the first time.
A Cameroonian all-time leading goal scorer
Samuel Eto’o, the retired player and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, holds the record of the most goals scored in the AFCON in his 29 different appearances. He managed to net the ball 18 times, placing him four goals above his closest competitor, namely Laurent Pokou from Côte d’Ivoire. Notably, the eight goals that Vincent Aboubakar scored in the 2021 AFCON, increased his overall tally in the tournament to nine goals ranking him among the 14 highest goal scorers in AFCON history.
On the pitch since 1957
The AFCON tournament was launched in 1957, when Egypt secured the first-ever title after defeating the host country in Khartoum, Sudan. On that occasion, only three teams participated, Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. South Africa was also expected to compete but was disqualified due to the apartheid regime. Since then, Egypt has been the most decorated team on the continent with seven titles. Cameroon and Ghana followed lifting the AFCON cup five and four times, respectively.
