In fiscal year 2022, around 54 thousand tons of agricultural produce imported to Japan were certified organic, representing an increase from about 50.1 thousand tons in the previous fiscal year.
Agricultural produce distributed as organic foods in Japan has to be certified under the Organic Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) system or a comparable system in the case of imported products. The certification is done by auditors accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
