According to a global online survey in 2021, 54 percent of teens stated that participating in online challenges had no significant impact on them, whilst eleven percent reported that it was negative and 34 percent of respondents said that taking part in online challenges had an overall positive impact. Furthermore, 64 percent of respondents reported that participation of such activities had a positive impact on their friendships and relationships, specifically. There has been a rise in potentially dangerous challenges and hoaxes which can be found across all forms of social media platforms.
Impact of taking part in online challenges according to teens worldwide 2021
Research consisted of an online survey completed by 5,400 teens (including 1,800 13-15 year-olds, 1,800 16-17 year olds and 1,800 18-19 year-olds). The survey was also completed by 4,500 parents of teens and 1,000 educators giving a total sample size of 10,900 people worldwide. The sample was drawn from the UK, the US, Germany, Australia, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam and Argentina.
