According to a survey conducted from September to October 2022 in Japan, around half of nearly 2.5 thousand patients with mental disorders related to drug abuse were dependent mainly on stimulant drugs. Sleeping pills and antianxiety agents were the main reason for becoming drug-dependent for close to 18 percent of patients treated at psychiatric facilities.

*The survey was conducted among 221 psychiatric facilities across Japan. Attending doctors of 2,468 patients who received inpatient or outpatient treatments at respective facilities responded to the survey question.
Patients were diagnosed with mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use, excluding alcohol use, based on the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10-CM) designated by the World Health Organization (WHO.)
**Including antitussive agent, drug for the common cold, analgesic, sleeping pill, etc.
For prescription drugs and medicines, the patients used (abused) them for non-treatment purposes.
