Monthly number of resident departures from South Africa 2019-2022, by mode of travel

In January 2022, the number of South African resident travelers departing from South Africa amounted to nearly 178 thousand. Of those, the majority departed via road, amounting to 95.1 thousand and representing 53.5 percent of the total departures. Air travel followed with 81.9 thousand residents leaving the country using that means of transport. South Africans leaving the country by sea amounted to only 938. During the period under review, the number of residents traveling from the country peaked in December of each year. Moreover, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions, the number of South Africans traveling out of the country dropped to its lowest level in April 2020.
