In 2022, approximately 2.2 thousand suspects in Japan were cleared for child abuse, representing a continuous increase in the past decade. The highest share of almost 40 percent of those offenders was arrested for assault (no physical harm to the victim).

Figures for homicide, death or injury caused by gross negligence, and abandonment by a person responsible for protection include the number of murder-suicides and those committed immediately after childbirth.
Figures for injury and assault do not include those who were charged with aggravated offenses.
Figures for rape, etc. before 2017 only include "rape" cases defined in the Penal Code before the partial amendment. From 2017 onward, figures also include "forcible sexual intercourse."
Figures for others include cases of kidnapping, violations of the Child Welfare Law, violations of Act on Punishment of Activities Relating to Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, and the Protection of Children, among others.
