Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Portugal's tourism balance of payments was harshly affected, declining by more than 60 percent in 2020 over the previous year. And, despite the recovery in 2021, the tourism payment balance in the Iberian country remained around 51.5 percent below 2019. In 2022, however, the payment balance rose to 15.6 billion euros and to 18.8 billion euros in 2023.
