Companion apps for gaming consoles have grown in popularity in 2020. Companion apps are a convenient tool for gamers to access console gaming services on the go without having to access their stationary console. Downloads of game console companion apps peaked in the second quarter of 2020 before declining towards 2021. However, in 2023, companion apps were on the rise again. In the most recently measured quarter, PC gaming service Steam was ranked first with approximately 33.4 million downloads worldwide. In comparison, the Xbox companion app generated approximately 25.5 million downloads during the same period.
