Montalto Di Castro power station is the largest operational gas-fired power plant in Europe as of 2021, with a gross generating capacity of 3.6 gigawatts, equally split in four combined-cycle gas turbines. This power plant is located in Italy, sponsored by Enel SpA, and uses the technology of combined heat and power, generating heat and electricity. By comparison, Pembroke power station in the United Kingdom is the second largest gas plant and has five combined-cycle gas turbines which combined have a total capacity of 2.3 gigawatts. Most of the largest gas power plants are located in the United Kingdom.
