In September 2021, the Labor Party received the highest share of votes in the Norwegian parliamentary election, with 26.3 percent. The Conservative Party, who has been the senior partner in a coalition government over the last eight years, received 20.4 percent of the votes. Moreover, whereas the Red Party crossed the electoral threshold of four percent for the first time in its history, the Christian Party fell below it for the first time since 1945.

The Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) is elected every four years. There are 169 seats in the Norwegian Parliament, distributed in accordance with a method known as proportional representation. The system guarantees that political parties gain seats in the Norwegian Parliament in proportion to the number of votes cast for them throughout the country.
