The Gender Parity Index (GPI) in youth literacy in Ethiopia increased by 0.3 (+43.48 percent) in 2017 in comparison to the previous year. Therefore, the GPI in Ethiopia reached a peak in 2017 with 0.98. Over the observed period, the GPI has been subject to fluctuation. The gender parity index for youth literacy rate refers to the proportion of females to males between the ages of 15 and 24 who can read and write as well as understand simple expressions about their daily lives.
The Gender Parity Index (GPI) measures the relative access to education of both males and females. A score equal to one means complete gender parity. Scores below one indicate that males are favored over females, while scores exceeding one indicate that females are favored over males. The source indicates that adult literacy rate is the ratio of females to males from age 15 to 24 who can both read and write as well as understand a short simple statement about their everyday life. It also states that literacy rate is an outcome indicator to measure educational attainment, adding that data on literacy are compiled by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics based on national censuses and household surveys and, for countries without literacy data, by using the Global Age-Specific Literacy Projection Model (GALP).
