In the academic year 2019/2020, there was a total number of 220,238 students in universities in Tanzania, two thirds of which were enrolled in public institutions. This was the highest number of enrolled students in the tertiary education since the academic year 2017/2018. On average, private university students corresponded to one third of the total throughout each of the three observed academic years.
