Contactless payment market share during COVID-19 in the United States 2019-2020
Whilst more debit cards in the United States supported NFC payments in 2020, their market share in overall debit payments was relatively small. This according to a report released over the course of 2021, which states that U.S. contactless transactions made up less than two percent of debit payments. Traditionally, debit card figures are lower than those of credit cards in the country - potentially indicating that percentage might even be lower when credit cards are included. The source does add, however, that debit transactions in 2020 were higher than credit transactions - the first time in the source's history this development occurred.
