More than four out of five French people under the age of 35 did not turn out for the first round of the regional elections on June 20, 2021. Lack of information may be one possible explanation for this, as only about half of the 18-25 year olds knew that they would be held in June when they were asked about this before the first round of elections. More generally, abstention rates are often higher among young people in France: in the second round of the 2017 legislative elections, only a quarter of them had gone to the polls, and in the 2019 European elections, the abstention rate of 18-24 year olds was 61 percent.
