The total number of Al-Azhar institutes in Egypt amounted to 11,314 as of the academic year 2021/2022. Of these, the majority provided education to primary schooling with over 3,630 institutes. Moreover, 3,481 institutes granted preparatory level schooling. Azhari secondary level education was administered by close to 2,300 institutes.

Al-Azhar's education system is overrun by the Supreme Council of the Al-Azhar Institution and runs parallel to the public education system in Egypt. The institution is independent of the Ministry of Education but it is under the supervision of the Prime Minister.
