From January to late November 2021, the federal government of Brazil invested 19.5 million Brazilian reals in advertising on Globo. Record and SBT received 17.1 million and 16.5 million reals, respectively. In the two previous years, the government allocated more of the TV advertising budget in Record and SBT – although Globo is Brazil's most-viewed TV channel. The shift followed a decision by the Federal Court of Accounts, ruling that the distribution should follow audience ratings again. Before that determination, the Bolsonaro administration had altered the pattern – Jair Bolsonaro was sworn in on January 1, 2019. On June 17, 2020, he recreated Brazil's Ministry of Communications and appointed congressman Fábio Faria as the head of that department. Faria is a son-in-law of Silvio Santos, the owner of SBT.
