The COVID-19 pandemic, which first hit Italy in late February 2020, had a massive impact on life in the country. The measures adopted by the Italian government to control the contagion pushed many businesses to stop or radically scale down their activities. According to a recent survey, around 7.3 million people were working from home as of April 2021, corresponding to 31.6 percent of the total working population in Italy. Among remote workers, almost 40 percent would be happy to go back to the office, if given the chance. On the other hand, around 17 percent of the respondents who worked from home would do anything not to go back, with six percent of them ready to cut their salary in order to stay home.
