Over 75 thousand migrants attempted to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe in the first half of 2021. The number increased significantly compared to the two previous years. By comparison, attempted crossings amounted to less than 48 thousand in the first half of 2020, probably also because of the mobility restrictions due to the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The source specifies that "the total of attempted crossings is calculated by adding the figures on migrant arrivals in Spain, Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus, the figures on interceptions by the Turkish, Libyan, Tunisian and Algerian coast guards, and the figures on recorded migrant deaths and disappearances. Monthly data on interceptions by the Algerian Coast Guard are not available for 2019, and no data on interceptions by the Moroccan Coast Guard are available for 2019, 2020 and 2021."
