In 2019, 23 cases of lyme disease were reported in South Korea. While this is a low figure, it still represents a 1,050 percent increase compared to the two reported cases in 2011. Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease with a large variety of symptoms, which can become chronic. In South Korea, it is classified as a Group IV infectious disease, and diagnosed cases must be reported to health authorities. Group IV infectious diseases are diseases which may be newly emerging in the country, or may have been contracted abroad and brought back.
