As of 2020, about 29 percent of the population in Japan was concentrated in the Greater Tokyo Area. The three metropolitan areas Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, accounted for around 53 percent of the Japanese population.

The Greater Tokyo Area includes the prefectures of Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. The Greater Osaka Area includes the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, and Nara. The Greater Nagoya Area includes the prefectures of Nagoya, Gifu, and Mie.
