In March 2021, 26 percent of micro and small enterprises in Kenya registered an increase in the number of customers paying digitally. The usage of digital payments was, however, stronger in 2020, when the lockdown was implemented to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19). Between April and July that year, 58 percent of small businesses recorded an increment in the number of clients paying through digital methods.

According to the source, "to track the progress of businesses in the sample, the wave two survey went back to the 603 businesses owners that were active in February 2020 and attempted to reinterview them in March 2021. In wave two, only 492 businesses could be traced from the
original wave one sample of 603, and 442 business owners agreed to
participate and completed the interview".
