As of January 2024, around 65.6 percent of bicycle users in Japan had insurance providing for bicycle accidents, like a personal liability insurance policy, increasing from 56 percent in 2018. Within the last years, more and more prefectures in Japan have made it mandatory for bicycle users to take out such policies.

FY 2022: January 11 to 13, 2022: n= 16,635
**Respondents were bicycle users from all over Japan selected regionally in proportion to the population.
Original question: "Are you covered by an insurance that provides for bicycle accidents (personal liability insurance, etc.)?" Respondents who replied "probably insured" were counted as "insured".
