In October 2023, the Final Fantasy video game series had generated approximately 185 million lifetime unit sales, making it one of the most popular gaming franchises worldwide. The main series consists of mainly fantasy or science fantasy roleplaying games, but also includes tactical RPGs, massively multiplayer online role-playing (MMO) games, and mobile titles. Final Fantasy games are numbered and whereas the stories in the game are individual to the numbered entry, there are certain Final Fantasy concepts that appear throughout the metaseries. The most recently published numbered mainline entry is Final Fantasy XVI, which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 5 in June 2023.
