Most children in child labor in Sub-Saharan Africa were commonly found in rural areas. Consequently, a high share (81.5 percent) worked in agricultural activities. The industrial sector was the one with the least share of children in child labor (5.3 percent), while 13.2 percent were engaged in the service sector. According to estimates, there were more than 86 million children in child labor in Africa in the same year.

According to the source, the 2020 calculations are based on the extrapolation of data from national household surveys. The new estimates use more than 100 household surveys covering two thirds of the world’s population of children aged 5 to 17 years.
