The Summer Olympics were scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020, but the event was postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Many other sporting events were also cancelled that year or played behind closed doors, while others were played with just a fraction of the usual attendance. Similarly, for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, international fans will not be allowed to attend in person, but up to 10,000 local fans will be allowed at the events.
During a survey conducted in May 2021 in the United States, a majority of respondents, 43 percent, stated that they thought Japan should allow fan attendance in stadiums during the games, while 30 percent of respondents thought stadium attendance should not be allowed.
