Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) ranked as the leading bank in East Africa, according to the level of tier 1 capital, which consists of core capital, reserves, retained earnings, and minority interests. The financial institution registered capital of roughly 1.4 billion U.S. dollars. Equity Bank Group of Kenya and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia followed with tier 1 capital evaluated at 1.2 billion U.S. dollars and 940 million U.S. dollars, respectively.

"The ranking for the Top 100 Banks survey uses Tier 1 capital which consists of capital + reserves + retained earnings + minority interests. The figures in local currencies are converted into US dollars at the foreign exchange rates on 31 December 2019 or on the year-end date in the results. Data comes from Moody’s Analytics BankFocus, Bankers’ Almanac and from African Business inhouse research. We have excluded some banks where data is old or unreliable".
