Around 17.5 million metric tons of steel scrap were exported by the United States in 2022. Close to 20 percent of these exports were sent to Mexico, which was the leading country of destination for U.S. steel scrap, dwarfing all other countries. Turkey, second in the ranking, represented some 19 percent of the total exports.
