The hotel industry was one of the sectors most affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. Many establishments were forced to close their doors to the public and the few that remained open experienced extremely low occupancy rates compared to the previous year. In the Paris region of Île-de-France, hotels reached their lowest occupancy rate in April 2020, which was barely 20 percent. Figures experienced a slight recovery during the summer period, however, performance still did not reach pre-pandemic levels.
COVID-19 impact on the hotel industry in Paris
In the Paris region, one of the most popular tourist locations in France, several key performance indicators specific to the hotel industry experienced a significant decrease in 2020. The number of nights spent in hotels in Paris decreased by nearly 27,000 in the space of a year. Meanwhile, the average price of a standard double hotel room in the French capital fluctuated drastically in the space of a few months in 2020, for example, going from 194 euros in May to 125 euros in July.
Cultural attractions also suffered in Paris
In 2020, Parisian cultural spaces also suffered from a significant lack of attendance. Among the main cultural attractions in Paris in terms of visitors’ number, the Louvre Museum recorded 2.7 million visitors that year, which is well below its usual annual attendance of around 10 million visitors. Similarly, the Eiffel Tower saw its number of visitors drop from six million in 2019 to not even two million in 2020.
