The number of girls at risk of child marriage is expected to increase globally due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In West and Central Africa, additional 450 thousand girls will risk child marriage between 2020 and 2025, according to estimates. Moreover, in East and Southern Africa, child marriage would concern 158 thousand girls more compared to estimates conducted before the pandemic. In Africa, the outbreak also led to increased poverty.
