In the fiscal year 2020, the import volume of LNG from the United States to Japan amounted to approximately 6.2 million metric tons, the highest amount of the past two decades. Figures had decreased as low as 157 thousand metric tons in fiscal 2015 but have been on a continuous upward trend ever since.
Due to Japan's lack in domestic fossil fuel reserves, the country is heavily dependent on imports.
