In the fiscal year 2021, Japan imported approximately 118 million metric tons of coal from Australia. Australia remained the by far the largest supplier of coal to Japan, followed by Indonesia with more than 22 million tons. Since Japan lacks domestic reserves of fossil fuels, it is heavily dependent on imports.
