As of 2020, Tunisia and South Africa recorded the highest share of African firms that were officially registered before starting operations, corresponding to 96 percent and 95.8 percent, respectively. The proportion of businesses operating formally varied significantly within the continent. In 2018, only around 67 percent of the enterprises in Chad started their activities being formally registered.
