From August 2020 to April 2021, around 46.6 percent of Brazilian soccer players in top division clubs in Spain who kept their Instagram profiles open for comments received remarks the source considered racist. In France and the United Kingdom, the shares amounted to 33.3 and 24 percent, respectively. According to a 2018 survey, seven percent of internet users in the European Union thought online material that promotes racial hatred was a minor crime or not a crime at all.
