According to a survey on the steps to enable a security framework in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2020, 50 percent of respondents agreed that de-escalation agreements were the unifying principles to underpin a regional security process in Syria. At the same time, 36 percent of respondents agreed that de-escalation agreements were unifying principles to underpin a regional security process in the entire MENA region.

Semi-structured interviews were used, with 210 experts and current and former policymakers in 15 territories including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
