In 2022, the Spanish pharmaceutical industry invested approximately 632.5 million euros in external research and development projects. Madrid and Catalonia were the autonomous communities with the highest share of external R&D expenditure that year, concentrating around 30.5 percent and 26.7 percent of the total external research pharmaceutical spending in the country, respectively.
